Frequently Asked Questions

When did CME become required for licensure?
On July 1, 2000, the Oklahoma Medical Practice Act was amended to require Continuing Medical Education (CME) in order to renew an Oklahoma Medical License. If you are not familiar with the requirement, the specific law is printed on this page.

What if...?
If you have not acquired the needed number of hours or are unsure if you have enough hours, it would be prudent to verify your information first or if you have questions about the CME law then contact the Board Office @ 405-962-1400 ext. 170 or email licensing@okmedicalboard.org before renewing your license. Misrepresenting this issue is equivalent to a fraudulent application and could seriously jeopardize your license to practice.

If you do not have the required hours at the time you are renewing, here are your options:
  1. There are numerous ways to obtain category 1 hours in a relative short period of time by referring to the CME section on this website.
  2. If you are close to your renewal deadline and you need some additional hours, you have 60 days after your renewal date to obtain the necessary hours and simply renew with the late fee. (Note: the 60 days is not a grace period, your license is "inactive" and you can not practice during that time) If you wait beyond the 60 days, your license is suspended and you will not be able to renew your license.
