Indian Territory prior to 1889 - In 1830 Indian Territory was set aside by the US government as a home for the forcibly displaced American Indians. The western section was opened to general settlement in 1889 and became part of the Oklahoma Territory in 1890. The two territories were merged in 1907 to form the state of Oklahoma.
