Steamer Heroine on the Red River, 1838, painting by Peter Rindlisbacher. On May 6, 1838, the steamboat Heroine was navigating the Red River on its way to deliver much-needed supplies to the soldiers at Fort Towson. Just twenty minutes from its destination, the Heroine hit a snag and quickly sank. The passengers survived, but the supplies and the ship were lost. In 1999 the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University collaborated in an underwater excavation of the site in the Red River. Exhibits telling the story of the Heroine and displaying the excavated artifacts are on display at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City and Fort Towson Historic Site in Fort Towson, Oklahoma.
