Oklahoma State Capitol

Oklahoma State Capitol

Trait Thompson

$25.00

The Oklahoma State Capitol was designed by the architecture firm of Layton and Smith and constructed by James Stewart and Company. The groundbreaking for the neoclassical building took place on July 20, 1914, almost seven years after Oklahoma became a state. Three years later, the six-story building was completed on June 30, 1917. The capitol is clad in Indiana limestone along with red granite quarried near Troy, Oklahoma. Due to a limited budget, the ornamental dome was omitted, but it was added eighty-five years later in 2002. The building is home to the Oklahoma legislature and various executive branch offices, including the governor. The capitol underwent a $280 million restoration from 2014 to 2022.
